How to Use Supi Sauna Wax

17/03/2026

In the article “How to Use Supi Sauna Wax,” I share my personal experiences with using Supi Sauna Wax and how I managed to refresh my Finnish sauna trailer here in the Alps.

If you want to give your own sauna a fresh look or protect its wooden surfaces, you’ll find practical tips and honest insights in this post — from cleaning and waxing to the final results.

How to Use Supi Sauna Wax

How to Use Supi Sauna Wax

In spring 2024, I bought a used sauna trailer that I’ve been renting out to private customers here in southern Germany, in the beautiful Bavarian Alps.

The moment I saw the sauna, I knew the wooden walls needed to be treated with sauna wax. But that first summer, I didn’t manage to get around to it. At first, I didn’t even know where to buy sauna wax.

Being a sauna owner or builder here isn’t as easy as in Finland – you can’t just walk into a local store or hardware shop and find what you need.

During our summer trip to Finland, I thought about buying sauna wax there, but soon realized that bringing it in my luggage might not be the best idea – it takes up space and maybe it’s not even allowed on a plane. I wasn’t sure.

After some searching online, I found one online shop that delivers to Germany. I ordered Supi Sauna Wax – both tinted and clear versions – and also tinted floor oil for the sauna floor.

🪵 Here’s what I used:

  • Tinted (233A) Supi Sauna Wax for walls and ceiling
  • Clear Supi Sauna Wax for benches
  • Tinted (233A) floor oil for the floor

The walls had yellowed quite a bit and there were visible marks from steam and heat. Apparently, the walls and ceiling had never been treated with any sauna protection, which explains the discoloration that had developed in such a short time.

The benches and wall panels are made of spruce.

My original plan was to keep the benches as natural-looking as possible – just protected with clear wax. However, I ran out of wax and only managed to finish the upper benches.

The front parts I ended up treating with regular oil, as I had done before. Next time, I’ll definitely order a bit more of the clear wax!

🧽 Step 1: Wash the Sauna

Always start by washing your sauna surfaces thoroughly.

If the wood looks uneven in color or glossy in some spots, sand it lightly and wipe off the dust with a slightly damp cloth.

🪶 Step 2: Applying Supi Sauna Wax

Here’s how to use Supi Sauna Wax correctly:

  1. Stir well before and during use. The pigments tend to sink to the bottom.
  2. Pour some wax into a separate container – especially if you’re using a small roller.
  3. Apply with a foam or synthetic brush in a thin, even layer.
  4. Work on one or two panels at a time.
  5. Wipe off the excess immediately with a lint-free cloth.
(If you skip this, the surface can become slippery!)
  6. Let it dry for 24 hours before heating the sauna.
  7. Preheat and ventilate well before your first sauna session.

💡 A Few Lessons Learned

I’m really happy I finally managed to wax my sauna trailer – but there were a few surprises along the way.

Even though I stirred the tinted wax carefully (and often!), I later noticed that some of the darker pigment had settled at the bottom of the can. That, of course, affected the color consistency a bit on the walls.

Also, the instruction on wiping off the excess wax with a lint-free cloth was missing from some of the guides I found online – and even from the product label! Luckily, I had read a Finnish source before starting, so I knew to do that, and it made a huge difference in the final result.

Applying wax inside a barrel-shaped sauna wasn’t the easiest either. The curved walls and loose panels meant I had to be extra careful to get into every little corner.

Still, I absolutely recommend waxing your sauna if you want to refresh its look and protect the wood. It took me about two days in total – including cleaning and preparation – maybe around 10 hours altogether.

🌿 Is Supi Sauna Wax Safe?

Yes – Supi Sauna Wax is designed especially for sauna interiors.

It’s water-based, low-odor, and safe once dried. The wax contains natural wax and resin that protect the wood from moisture and dirt without sealing it completely, allowing the surface to breathe.

This makes it a great and eco-friendly choice for sauna walls, ceilings, and benches.

I hope this article helped you understand how to use Supi Sauna Wax and what to expect from the process.

Warm greetings from the Alps –

Kati, a happy owner of a freshly renewed sauna trailer 🪵✨

Can you take a sauna with a new tattoo

08/07/2025

In the article “Can you take a sauna with a new tattoo”, I interviewed an expert in the field. Can you go to the sauna immediately after getting a tattoo? What are the things to consider with a fresh tattoo? How soon after getting a tattoo can you go to the sauna?

Can you take a sauna with a new tattoo

Tattoos

Tattoos have become more and more common every year. Nowadays you rarely see a person without a tattoo, especially when you’re on a sunny beach you can’t help but notice how many people have a tattoo on their skin.

The tattoo boom here in Germany is also quite big. I mean, free tattoo appointments are not available until next week. The queues at tattoo shops can be months or even a year long. That’s a long time to wait for the first or the next tattoo.

A tattoo is a lifelong choice and getting one should be carefully considered. That’s why it’s also important that you take good care of your tattoo after you get it. It is important to follow the tattooist’s instructions.

A competent tattooist will be able to advise and guide you exactly what can be done with a fresh tattoo and what is not recommended.

The after-effects of an untreated tattoo can be devastating. So be sure to follow your tattooist’s instructions.

Tattoo artists working abroad may not be able to advise you on how to proceed with a sauna or taking a sauna immediately after getting a tattoo. Or do not understand how to tell the client. In many countries, the sauna culture is not as big as in Finland and Germany, for example, so such things may go unnoticed.

Many people are wondering about this issue and a lot of information is being sought on this topic so I decided to write this article. A tattooist in Finland will certainly remember to tell you how it is and how to act according to the health requirements.

I interviewed tattooist Olivia Moonchild from the Otherside Tattoo Collective in Lahti.

Voiko saunaan mennä tatuoinnin kanssa

Who are you and how long have you been tattooing? How many tattoos do you have?

I am Olivia Moonchild and I have been tattooing as a profession since 2006. As for myself, I have tattoos on about 85% of my skin.

Can I go to the sauna with a fresh tattoo? If you can or can’t, what should you take into account?

It is not recommended to go to the sauna with a fresh tattoo. The skin is still sensitive and hot after the treatment. The temperature in the sauna creates a moist and warm environment which can contribute to the flourishing of bacterial strains that cause inflammation, for example.

In addition, the sauna invariably causes sweating and sweat carries impurities on the skin to the wound, thus creating an unnecessarily high risk of inflammation. The air in the sauna can also be dry, so the heat dries the wound surface, making the healing process more difficult.

You can enter the sauna as soon as the wound surfaces have completely healed. For me, it usually takes 2-5 days depending on the size of the tattoo.

Normally it takes 3-10 days depending on the individual.

The first few times in the sauna after getting a tattoo, I recommend taking light baths and lightly lubricating the skin after the sauna is always a good idea.

How soon can you sauna after a tattoo?

The recommendation is 2 weeks after tattooing. In that time, presumably all the wound surfaces will have healed, meaning the top layer of skin over the tattoo will have healed.

Are there any special things to take into consideration?

A fresh tattoo should always be touched with clean hands. A mild washing solution such as Sebamed is excellent for keeping a fresh tattoo clean, as it is hypoallergenic and does not sting or irritate the wound surfaces.

It is also really good to remember that it is not the sweat or perspiration itself that is the problem, but what the sweat carries with it. Various impurities accumulate on the surface of the skin every day and sweating profusely can carry these impurities to a fresh tattoo.

What should be taken into concern when bathing with a tattoo?

I recommend that you follow the treatment instructions given and only enter the sauna once the skin surface has healed. After that, you can take a sauna as normal.
