The birth of Kaurilan Sauna
Kaurila Sauna’s roots are originally in North Karelia. The company’s main building was moved to Meilahti in the early 90s. The main building was originally the Kaurila railway station, built as early as 1894.
Around the same time, a sauna building from Tuusula was moved to the plot. This was later named Kaurilan Sauna when it was opened as a public sauna.
Today, the buildings are in private use.
The Story of Kaurilan Sauna
Kaurilan Sauna was opened in 2009 as a public sauna. Saara Heikkinen, the founder of the sauna, wanted to offer her customers an authentic Finnish sauna experience with gentle and natural products. When she couldn’t find suitable products, she started making them herself.
Initially, she sewed linen towels for saunas, and as time passed, many customers wanted to buy them.
She also made soaps, shampoos and candles. The sauna users could test the products, and she developed and adjusted them according to customers’ wishes. Customers fell in love with the products and wanted to buy them as gifts for their friends. This is how Kaurila Sauna’s excellent cosmetic products were born.
At first, Saara sold products in her sauna or, for example, during Christmas at the market in Helsinki. Many companies wanted to resale her products, and in 2017, an online store was opened. In 2019, Saara opened the Kaurila Sauna store in Munkkiniemi, where many of her wonderful sauna products are on sale.
Kaurila Sauna’s cosmetic products are still handmade in Helsinki’s Pitäjänmäki. Depending on the season, Saara has 5-10 employees.
Kaurilan Sauna cosmetic products
Saara has a strong vision of offering only cosmetic products made from clean and responsible raw materials. Many people with sensitive skin or those sensitive to smells find it challenging to find products that work for them. Kaurila Sauna’s products include several fragrance-free products.
All Kaurilan Sauna cosmetic products are certified natural cosmetics. The products have not been tested on animals and are made by hand in Finland, in Helsinki’s Pitäjänmäki. Most of Kaurila Sauna’s cosmetic products are vegan. In addition, the selection includes several plastic-free and zero-waste products. All deodorants are alcohol-free and aluminium-free.
Body butter
Kaurila Sauna’s body butter has been awarded as one of the best natural cosmetic products in 2022.

Kaurila’s sauna body butter selections include charming lavender, refreshing rosemary, wonderful lemongrass, cheerful peppermint, lovely alpine rose and sunny orange.
Deo creams
Deo creams are made from natural ingredients and do not contain alcohol, aluminium or dyes. Deo creams are perfect for sensitive skin and keep unpleasant smells away.
The deodorant is made with two different recipes: beeswax and vegan almond wax.
Essential oils give deo creams beautiful scents or scent combinations.
Lemongrass, lemon & tea tree, eucalyptus & lime, fennel & peppermint, coriander & lime, black pepper, lavender, geranium, orange blossom, rosemary, alpine rose, lemon & cypress, and unscented are available as vegan.
The ones made from beeswax are lemongrass, lemon & tea tree, eucalyptus & lime, fennel & peppermint, coriander & lime, black pepper, lavender, geranium, orange blossom, rosemary, rhododendron and unscented.
What’s new are deo creams that are smaller and more solid in composition. Deo creams do not run even in higher temperatures.
These are available in: Alpine rose, orange blossom, peppermint, lemon & tea tree, and lemongrass.
Shampoo bars
Selected high-quality vegetable oils have been used in the production of the shampoos. Bar shampoos do not contain sulfates, silicone or parabens. Bar shampoos are great for people with sensitive skin, fragrances and allergies.
Shampoo bars are also vegan.
Shampoo bars are long-lasting and reduce packaging materials in the bathroom. You can choose between cardboard or metal packaging.
These products can be used by everyone, from babies to adults.
Shampoo bars are hygienic if you let them dry between uses.
Shampoo bars are easy to take to the swimming pool, the gym, on a trip, or a plane. The packaging is light, and you don’t have to worry about something spilling on the bottom of the bag.
Here’s how to use the bar shampoo:
- Wet your hair well.
- Comb your hair lightly with a piece of shampoo,
- after that, lather the shampoo in your hair.
- The shampoo bar lathers easily, and you can choose the amount of shampoo according to how dirty your hair is.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- There are nine different shampoo bars in Kaurila Sauna’s selection: Blackcurrant, apricot, avocado, oat, hemp, olive, evening primrose, sunflower and camelina.
Kaurilan Sauna rose soap
Kaurila Sauna’s salt soaps and exfoliating sand soaps are long-lasting and gentle on your skin.
Salt soaps are perfect for dry winter or atopic skin; you can wash the whole body and face with them.
High-quality vegetable oils and salt have been used in their production. Salt soaps are fragrance-free, dye-free and vegan products.
Use of salt soap:
- Moisturize hands and skin; rub the soap into your hands and skin.
- Rinse with plenty of water.
- After use, let the salt soap dry on the soap tray. This way, it remains hygienic.
- Kaurila Sauna’s selection includes five different salt soaps: Sea salt, hemp salt, and camelina, which are suitable for the whole body. Rose salt and clay salt soap are especially suitable for the face, washing the beard and shaving.
Lace candles
Kaurila Sauna’s vegan lace candles are made of olive-based eco-stearin. They burn with a large, steady flame at about half a centimetre per hour.
When lit, a wonderfully delicate and fragile lace edging forms on the candles. Large or small candles are available. The big lace candle burns for about 60 hours. A small lace candle burns for about 20 hours.
Kaurila Sauna’s cosmetic products include body oils, foot bath bombs, foot creams and scrubs.
