The best sauna scents

27/04/2021

In the “Best sauna scents” article, I share my favourite sauna fragrances. Osmia’s biodegradable sauna fragrances are, in my opinion, the highest quality sauna fragrances on the market.

Do you use sauna scents?

Do you know how to use sauna scents?

A brief history of steam scents

Steam or sauna fragrances have been used for centuries. Before commercial sauna scents were developed, fresh leaves and herbs were used to bring a fresh smell to the sauna.

Today, most sauna fragrances are sold in bottles, as fragrances and oils. This is due to the fact that more people live in an urban environment where it is not easy to find fresh leaves and herbs.

Sauna scents bring a wonderful scent and atmosphere to the sauna. They can also have a therapeutic effect. If you want to enjoy the healing effects, use fresh or dried leaves, or essential oils.

Let’s look at birch and birch leaves, for example.

Birch prevents inflammation and relieves muscle and joint pain. Birch can help treat sinusitis and/or runny nose. Add fresh or dried birch leaves in the water and pour the water over your stone to create steam. After a while, your nose starts to run, allowing the mucus to drain. It opens a stuffy or a clogged nose.

As I said, it is not always possible to use fresh or dried leaves. Fortunately, there are some high-quality, natural sauna fragrances on the market.

As far as I know, steam fragrances sold in bottles have been available since the 90s. How long have you known about them?

While there is a lot to choose from, you should be careful what you buy.

I have noticed that there are major differences between the fragrances. I’ve tried several different brands and some of them are not worth your money. They may have a strong smell, but the scent does not match the description at all.

I recently discovered the Osmia sauna fragrance series. The scents are high quality, and the selection is big. On top of all that, the products are environmentally friendly.

I interviewed Anne Mäkijärvi from Osmia, who answered a few of my questions:

Are these sauna fragrances dangerous to breathe?

Sauna scents are not dangerous to breathe (otherwise we would not be allowed to buy/sell them).

Is there anything to consider when using these products?

How to use the sauna fragrance: Mix 2-3 capfuls of fragrance with about 5 litres of lukewarm water. Enjoy the steam.

What do these steam fragrances contain?

Steam fragrances use a patented diluent called MMB (alcohol was used in the past, which caused transport problems)

Why was the diluent changed?

EU chemicals legislation is quite strict. The use of alcohol as a diluent became difficult because the liquid is flammable (approx. 50% alcohol). A long list of warnings had to be printed on the label as required by law (e.g., “may cause dizziness or nausea”). Also, according to a strict interpretation of the law, flammable liquids should no longer be sent as a postal package due to the fire risk.

MMB is non-toxic, non-combustible and biodegradable, making it ideal for this use.

What are the five most popular steam fragrances in Osmia?

  1. Birch
  2. Pine
  3. Smoke sauna
  4. Juniper
  5. Honey herb

Thank you for your answers Anne Mäkijärvi.

Notes on the use of sauna fragrances:

  • Always check the dosing instructions on the side of the bottle.
  • Prepare your bucket of water before you enter the sauna.
  • Store sauna aromas and scents in the shower or in the dressing room.
  • Only use diluted water to create steam.
  • Do not put use sauna fragrance to a hot sauna aroma bowl.
  • Steam fragrances are safe to use, just follow the instructions.

There are so many different sauna scents, I am sure you will find your favourite. You can find these and other great sauna products from my Sauna Shop. I currently sell and ship these products to Europe and the rest of the world.
