Sauna and hot tub – an inseparable duo

14/09/2021

***Paid partnership with Kirami***

Sauna and hot tub – an inseparable duo explores the world of hot tubs and garden saunas. The Finnish sauna culture has changed fundamentally with the introduction of hot pots. But has it changed permanently or only momentarily? We’ll just have to wait to find out!

Kirami hot tubs

Bathing tub, hot tub, hot pot or simply Kirami. Have you already experienced the relaxing and soothing atmosphere of the hot tub?

I have noticed that there is a real hot tub boom going on in Finland. Many cottages have a wood-burning hot tub in the garden as well as a sauna.

It seems that nowadays the sauna and hot tub are an inseparable duo. They simply belong together. I don’t think they’re competitors. On the contrary, the hot tub and the sauna support each other. Combining the two guarantees complete relaxation and well-being. Especially since not all summer cottages and houses are built next to a body of water.

I think the hot tub offers great new possibilities for cottages and homes that are built on dry land, without sea or lake nearby. The Finnish summer is often cool, so the warmth of a hot tub gives a lot of added value to the cottages.

The cottage season continues well into the autumn and can begin as soon as the snow melts.

The Finnish sauna culture has now changed, the sauna and the hot tub belong very closely together. This trend is also spreading to other sauna-enthusiastic countries as well!

Kirami

Kirami is a family business operating in Sastamala, Finland. It first started as a Swedish hot tub (badbalja) reseller in 2001.

In 2003, they decided to make their own hot tubs. Kirami has grown steadily and in 2020 sales have almost doubled from the previous year.

This year, Kirami has celebrated its 20th anniversary. As of May 28, 2021, Kirami is part of the Harvia Group.

Kirami is a leading manufacturer of Finnish-style hot tubs that supplies hot pots around the world. Central Europe and the Nordic countries are Kirami’s main market areas. Germany, for example, has become a major export country in the last couple of years.

The coronavirus has brought its own challenges and benefits. During the pandemic, spas and sauna worlds have rushed to close their doors. Many Germans have built, or commissioned a sauna for their own garden or house. Hot tubs have also been in high demand.

My own experiences

I have lived abroad for ten years and I see things a little differently than those who live in Finland. I remember hot tubs coming on sale in the early 2000s.

For the past five years, I haven’t been able to avoid a hot pot boom. We always rent a cottage in Finland in the summer. At some point, we noticed that there are more and more cottages with a hot tub on the market. At first, we were not very interested in renting a cottage with a hot tub. Neither I nor my partner had yet tested a hot tub. Our son was also very young, so it did not feel important to us.

In the summer of 2019, we were on holiday in Finland and rented a cottage without a hot tub. A friend and his family also rented a cottage nearby which had a hot tub. I first got to test it with my friends. I loved being able to sit in the warm water for a long time. It was wonderful to spend time with friends with a drink in our hands and chat.

The second time we visited my friend’s cottage was with my partner and our son. We took a sauna and stayed in the hot tub all day. Our 3-year-old son did not want to get out of the hot tub at all! It wasn’t until the water started to get cool that we were able to persuade him to get out. My fingers were all pruney from saying in the water but it was lovely and the time just flew by!

When my partner noticed how excited our son was about the hot tub and the warm water, he wanted to get a hot tub for our garden. He even thought about buying more land from a neighbour because our garden is so small.

In the summer of 2020, we rented a cottage with a hot tub. Now, we always rent a cottage with a hot tub!

Last summer, our cottage was next to Helvetinjärvi National Park and by a small pond. The water in the pond was dark, probably because of peat or mud. We used the water in the hot tub and it made the skin absolutely, wonderfully soft.

There was no need to worry about moisturizer all week. I could say that this peat/mud treatment rejuvenated us all by years. My mother-in-law was also pleased and noticed the effect on her skin for a long time. Nature’s own wellness, you don’t need anything else!
