Can you have sex in the sauna?

28/02/2023

Can you have sex in the sauna? -article talks about sauna and sex. What should you take into account when making love in a sauna? Are there any health risks? Is it okay to have sex in a friend’s sauna?

Please note that I am focusing on private saunas. Many countries explicitly ban sex in public saunas and other places.

Can you have sex in the sauna

The famous Finnish Saturday sauna

Most Finns take a sauna on Saturdays. Over the years, an addition has been made to this tradition, which usually takes place after the sauna: the Saturday sauna sex.

Many people think that sex tastes better after a sauna, and I can’t say this is not true. You are fresh from the sauna, clean and with red cheeks; your spouse looks glowing and naturally beautiful. In Finland, it is said that a woman is at her most beautiful after a sauna.

But that you can or should have sex in the sauna?

Many Finns think that the sauna is a sacred place and should not be associated with sex at all. Others say that in the old days, the sauna was the only place where sex was practised. It could be the only place where the father and mother of the family could be in peace.

I interviewed an expert in the field, Auli Apunen, who is currently studying to become a sex counsellor.

Is there any danger in having sex in a sauna?

Sex can mean many kinds of sexual intercourse. Touching and closeness hardly cause any greater danger. Still, in fast-paced sex or penetration, you should consider how and where you have sex in the sauna.

Falling off benches or burning yourself on the stove hardly lifts the mood. There is always a risk of dehydration in a hot environment.

What should you consider when making love in a sauna?

Hydration should be sufficient, as there is a risk of dehydration in a hot sauna. You can sweat up to 0.5 l per sauna session without any additional exercise, so regardless of the nature of sex, non-alcoholic hydration should be a priority.

For example, sparkling water or water lightly seasoned with sea salt are good sauna drinks. Alcohol dehydrates and is not a recommended sauna drink, especially when having sex in a hot and often cramped space.

You should also think about how much steam you want so you don’t feel stuffy or run out of oxygen. Mild baths are the best when it comes to sexual performance.

Sweating can create friction, so it can be good to keep lube close at hand so that it can be added if needed. Water-based Lubricants can dry quickly in the sauna, so silicone or oil-based Lubricants may work better in grip.

Water-based Lubricants are also not suitable for sex that takes place in water (for example, in the shower or swimming pool in connection with a sauna) because the lubricant dissolves in water.

Taking care of possible contraception is also essential. Note! Oil-based lubricants are not recommended with condoms.

Do you have any good tips on how to enjoy sex in the sauna as well?

Sauna benches can be great for oral sex and trying out different positions. The fabrics may add softness and comfort to the positions.

You can also try the sauna whisk on different parts of the body.

You can find additional pleasure in different sauna scents. The sauna’s heat may be a pleasant place for sex for a person suffering from muscle aches.

The most important thing in sex in the sauna and elsewhere is to respect your and the other person’s boundaries. You should always stop if you feel bad or the other person asks you to.

Is it appropriate to have sex in other people’s saunas, for example, at your friend’s house?

It isn’t easy to give a correct answer to this. Why wouldn’t it be? Consider whether you want others to have sex in your sauna or home. Respecting other people’s property and not destroying places is always important. Otherwise, I don’t see a problem with it.

And what should be taken into account if you make love in someone else’s sauna?

Maintaining hygiene and cleaning the sauna carefully after sex is most important. You can also think about possible sounds and vocalizations coming from sex, depending on how open and direct your friends are about having sex, especially if there are others nearby.

When should you not have sex in a sauna?

Those suffering from cardiovascular diseases should leave sex to the bathroom, dressing room or bedroom. The real danger is that the heart is overloaded in the heat, and a heart attack can occur in the worst case. Especially if you have high blood pressure, sex in the sauna is not recommended.

Can you have sex in the condominium’s sauna?

Most Finnish apartment buildings and townhouses have a shared sauna. There are also many opinions about sex in these spaces. Some people think that why not. Others believe you shouldn’t have sex in public places. You should use your judgment and respect the shared space to avoid making others feel awkward.

What to consider when having sex in a sauna:

  • Mild temperature
  • Lower benches may be a better option as they are not as hot
  • If necessary, open the door
  • Create a romantic atmosphere with candles
  • Bring towels and pillows
  • Pre-warm up in the sauna
  • Massage
  • Touch
  • Seductive looks
  • Sauna whisk

The actual sex can be performed in the shower, washroom, dressing room, cooling room, on the terrace, in bed, on the couch, etc., especially if the other party has become too hot in the heat of the sauna or has started to feel dizzy.

Do you have personal success or horror stories? You can share your experience in the comments.

I hope this “Can you have sex in a sauna” article helped you find more information about sex and the sauna.
