In the “Best products for cleaning the sauna” article, I share which ecological products you can use to make your sauna smell clean and fresh.
Cleaning the sauna and taking care of its condition is one of the most important things when you have bought, built or built a sauna for yourself. Unfortunately, you can spoil and quickly destroy even an expensive, high-quality sauna.
Nothing is as unpleasant as going to a sauna that smells bad. A foul smell indicates that humidity has started to attack the sauna benches.
A damp smell and dark spots on the surface or below the benches indicate that the sauna needs to be appropriately maintained.
Fortunately, there are a few ways to avoid this.
You should take care of the sauna every time you use the sauna. Dry the benches, ventilate the sauna to make it fresh and remember the rule of thumb: leave enough firewood in the wood stove or, if you use an electric sauna, leave the sauna on for 20 minutes when you’re done.
Cleaning the sauna should be done about 2-3 times a year.
The best products for cleaning the sauna
Remember to clean the sauna with the right kind of substances.
In recent years, I have used various ecological alternatives, and yes, they can clean the sauna and sauna benches properly.
One detergent especially has made cleaning the sauna a pleasant chore.
EUCA detergent concentrate smells of wonderfully fresh eucalyptus. And what’s best: it cleans the benches, the sauna and washroom floor, and the shower tiles. You can use one detergent for all of these, and you don’t have to consider whether it’s unsafe.
Euca detergent concentrate is an ecological detergent that you can use for more than just washing the sauna. You can wash dishes, laundry, floors and even a car with it.
Euca is a concentrate that you add to water, so you don’t buy water with a bottle, just the good stuff.
Euca is ecological, refreshes and cleans, and removes odours and impurities.
Euca contains water, ethanol, eucalyptus essential oil and biodegradable surfactants.
Euca does not contain preservatives, mould inhibitors, dyes, zeolite or phosphates.
Euca’s pH is neutral, so, unfortunately, it does not remove limescale; for that, you need an acidic product, for example, vinegar or citric acid.
How to wash the sauna
You only need 30 ml of Euca detergent concentrate in a bucket of water (10 l). With the same detergent, you can wash the floors and the tiles in the shower room, i.e. all surfaces that can withstand water washing.
Do like this:
- Move removable benches and stools out of the way.
- Vacuum or brush the dust off the sauna’s floor, walls and ceiling.
- Wet the wooden surfaces of the benches first with warm water to open the surface of the wood.
- Make a detergent mixture in a bucket, i.e. 30 ml of Euca in 5-10 l of water.
- Brush the benches with a soft brush, sponge, or sauna brush along the grain of the trees.
- Finally, rinse the benches with cold water to seal the surface of the wood. You can rinse with warm water first.
- Dry the benches with a dryer.
- Wash and rinse the walls from the bottom up. It is not necessary to wash the walls every time; monitor the situation.
- Also, remember to wash buckets, ladles, brushes and other sauna equipment.
- Wash the floor drain and grate. Empty the hair and other debris from the floor drain.
- Finally, wash the floor and dry it.
- Ventilate the sauna.
- Turn on the sauna for half an hour so that the sauna dries appropriately. At the same time, move the washed removable benches and the stool back to the sauna to dry.
- You can also use Euca detergent concentrate for other household cleaning purposes, such as washing dishes, laundry, stain removal, washing floors, washing carpets, washing hotpots, bathrooms and toilets. You can also use Euca to wash your car, motorhome and caravan inside and outside.
Euca eco detergent
What Euca eco detergent concentrate contains:
Water, Finnish ethanol, 5-15% non-ionic surfactants, anionic surfactants, and essential eucalyptus oil.
The function of the surfactant in the detergent is to loosen the dirt and, at the same time, prevent it from sticking back to the washed surface/laundry.
The pH of Euca eco-detergent is neutral.
Euca eco-detergent has three different surfactants with unique properties: one has been specially developed for laundry, cleans effectively, and leaves the laundry pleasantly soft.
The second effectively removes greasy dirt; the third is a surfactant developed for general, multi-purpose, and surface cleaning.
According to the detergent regulation (EC) No. 648/2004, all three surfactants are biodegradable.
